PIA, psychiatric outpatient clinic, or emergency department?

The terms sound similar but do not mean the same thing. The key question is whether you need specialist ongoing care, an outpatient appointment, or immediate help in acute danger.

What is a PIA?

A Psychiatrische Institutsambulanz belongs to a psychiatric hospital. Under section 118 SGB V, it particularly serves people who depend on this specialist care because of the type, severity, or duration of their condition. It is not automatically an open substitute when no therapy place is available.

What is a psychiatric outpatient clinic?

Outpatient clinic is a broad term for treatment without hospital admission. Each institution decides whom it accepts, which specialties it offers, and whether a referral is needed. Ask before traveling there.

When is the emergency department right?

Emergency departments are for acute situations that cannot wait, including immediate danger, severe confusion, or when someone cannot remain safe. Call 112 in immediate danger.

How do I get access?

PIAs and clinics have different admission rules. An appointment, referral, or assessment may be required. Ask: “Do you treat my situation, and what do I need for a first appointment?”

What does it cost?

For people with statutory insurance, medically necessary care in authorized institutions is generally billed through health insurance. Clarify responsibility and documents first.
