Guide from erstmalreden.de
Sometimes a first step online feels easier than calling. Chat, mail, apps, video, TelefonSeelsorge, or an AI conversation space can offer relief or orientation. But digital help is not automatically therapy, urgent help, or a guaranteed treatment place.
First contact & finding words
Online counseling may help with sorting thoughts, listening, signposting, or finding first words. Psychotherapy is treatment with professional rules. Some digital programs may be therapeutically supported. Others are information, conversation, or orientation only. Check what the offer promises and what it does not.
Chat may fit when calling feels too hard or you need short replies. Mail may fit when you need time to write. Phone may fit when you want to speak directly with a person. An app may offer exercises, a diary, or reminders. An AI chat may help you sort thoughts, but it does not replace counseling, treatment, or urgent help.
If writing feels easier, TelefonSeelsorge by chat or mail, krisenchat for young people, or Nummer gegen Kummer may fit depending on age and situation. If the topic is alcohol, drugs, gambling, or media use, DigiSucht is a specific digital starting point. If you need an appointment or a psychotherapeutic consultation (A first assessment appointment in a psychotherapeutic practice in Germany. It does not automatically mean a therapy place is available.), 116117 is usually the more relevant route. For health information, gesund.bund.de and Gesundheitsinformation.de are useful quality-assured starting points. The direct links are listed below under reliable information.
Trustworthy offers clearly explain who runs them, who they are for, possible costs, what happens to data, and where the limits are. Be careful when an offer promises quick healing, creates diagnoses from a few clicks, pressures you to buy, or does not say who is responsible.
Digital offers are not always immediately available, and not every offer is made for acute danger. If you cannot stay safe, might harm yourself, or someone is in immediate danger, real urgent help matters. In Germany, call 112 in acute danger. The full list of crisis contacts is on the urgent-help page.
There are dedicated writing and chat services for young people. That can feel easier than a phone call. Still, if you are in acute danger or do not feel safe, do not stay alone. Use real urgent help or reach a person near you.
You do not have to find the perfect digital offer. Choose one concrete next place instead: for example TelefonSeelsorge, krisenchat, Nummer gegen Kummer, DigiSucht, 116117 (Germany’s medical on-call and appointment service. It is not an emergency number; call 112 in immediate danger.), or a real counseling service. If writing or calling is still too much, prepare one first sentence. If one path does not fit, that does not mean help in general does not fit.
