What is a psychotherapeutic consultation hour?

A psychotherapeutic consultation hour is a first professional conversation. It helps assess what kind of support may make sense.

It is not therapy yet

A consultation hour is a first appointment for clarification. Afterwards, therapy, counseling, another treatment, or further diagnostics may be recommended.

You do not have to know everything

You can talk about what is difficult right now. Sentences like "I do not know exactly what is going on" or "I need an assessment" are enough.

How to find an appointment

You can contact practices directly or use the appointment service 116117. 116117 is not an emergency number. In acute danger, call 112.

Cost and referral

For people with statutory insurance, a consultation in an authorized practice is covered by health insurance. A referral is generally not required. Have your health insurance card ready and ask the practice if unsure.

What happens afterwards?

You receive a professional assessment and recommendations for possible next steps. A consultation does not automatically mean that the same practice can offer you an ongoing therapy place.

What you can do now

  1. Check practices or 116117.
  2. Say briefly that you are looking for a consultation hour.
  3. Note rejections in case you need further support later.
